Annual Vestry & Parochial Church Meetings
Thank you to those who attended the APCM last Sunday. We are all grateful that Dawn Davidson and Heather Butler were willing to stand again as Churchwarden and were duly elected. Susan Sparkes is now officially PCC Secretary, and Will Woodhouse is PCC Treasurer.

Coffee, Cake & Company
We are planning to resume a weekly coffee morning on Tuesdays from 1100-1230, in church, beginning on Tuesday 3rd May with freshly made cakes courtesy of Shane’s Kitchen. Volunteers to help would be very welcome, please – not every week, but on a rota. If anyone would like to come early at 1015, there will be a half hour Bible Study too.

Lent lunches
The six Lent lunches served in church raised a total of £421.30 for the St Anne’s Centre which provides breakfast and lunch every day for rough sleepers in Kemp Town. Many thanks to Dawn, Lorraine and other helpers.

Three funerals
Betty Maccario – Monday 9th May at 1430
Madeline Frankenhoff – Wednesday 18th May at 1200
Rosemary Tee – Monday 23rd May at 1330

NOTICES FOR 24TH APRIL 2022

Annual Vestry & Parochial Church Meetings
This year’s APCM (rather like an AGM) will be on Sunday 1st May after the 1000 Parish Eucharist. We will elect Churchwardens to serve for the coming year and members of the Parochial Church Council (where there are vacancies – posts are usually held for three years). Annual reports and accounts are on the APCM page at the bottom of our website homepage. There are a few inspection copies available at the back of church for those who don’t have internet access. Please don’t take them away. The size of the accounts reports this year and the high cost of postage means that we are not sending out copies in the post.

Healing Service…
Next Sunday, and every first Sunday of the month, at 1700.

Community Coffee Morning
We are planning to resume a weekly coffee morning on Tuesdays from 1100-1230, in church, beginning on Tuesday 3rd May. Volunteers to help would be very welcome, please – not every week, but on a rota which Lorraine de la Hoyde will organise for us. MUSIC AT ST MARGARET’S

Saturday 30th April 2022 at 1800
The Girls’ Choir of St Catharine’s College, Cambridge
Works by Purcell, Fauré and Pergolesi, also songs by Richard Rodney Bennett. Organ pieces played by the College Organ Scholar. Concluding with songs on scientific themes, from the choir’s project ‘Stem in Song’. Tickets £10.

‘an exceptional girls’ choir’  The Observer

Founded in 2008, the St Catharine’s College Girls’ Choir was the first college-based choir for girls in the UK, breaking with 900 years of tradition and setting a precedent which has been followed by several other institutions both here and abroad. The choir provides a unique and invaluable musical experience for girls aged 8 to 15; with many girls continuing to age 18 in the mixed-voice College Choir.

The choir sings weekly in the College’s 18th century Chapel, as well as giving regular concerts, and its repertoire extends from the early Middle Ages to the 21st century, including music both sacred and secular.

The choir is currently made up of 20 choristers and 8 probationers, aged between eight and fifteen, and are drawn from local schools. The choir is semi-independent of the mixed-voice student College Choir.

The choir has given performances in such distinguished venues as St Paul’s Cathedral, St David’s Hall, Cardiff and St John’s, Smith Square, and has sung services in several UK Cathedrals.  The girls have toured to the USA and throughout Europe. and are regularly asked to participate in major choral/orchestral works such as Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Mahler’s Third Symphony, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and Holst’s The Planets. The choir has made several appearances on BBC Radio, including a special edition of Radio 3’s The Choir with opera star Sarah Connolly as part of the celebrations marking International Womens’ Day; and a former head chorister of the choir was awarded BBC Young Chorister of the Year.

Can we help?

Dear Fr Anthony

As you know, we work in partnership with the St Anne’s Trust to provide breakfast and lunch to homeless and vulnerable people from our church hall. The numbers show no sign of reducing.

The gas cooker in our hall (owned by St Anne’s) is on its last legs. Due to the cost of a replacement gas appliance and flue requirements etc., we have decided to go for electric instead.

St Anne’s will purchase the cooker and have grant funding in place. St Mary’s will support with all the removal costs, installation, a new 32 amp fuse board, wiring, sockets, connection, and a stand for the new oven and a stainless steel table for three induction hobs.

The cost to St Mary’s is estimated at around £3,100. We have over £1,100 set aside from our Christmas appeal and a further private donation of £1,000 has been earmarked. It would be great to be able to raise the remainder as soon as we can to get these new facilities in place. I am asking if St Margaret’s might feel able to make a contribution for what you will know is a real need in our part of the city. Thank you so much.

With every blessing,
Fr Andrew Woodward Vicar of St Mary’s, Kemp Town

Please let Fr Anthony have cheques payable to St Mary's Church, Kemp Town or be in touch with him to ask for bank details to make an electronic transfer.

We have decided to exercise caution in our celebration of Christmas and the following services and events are cancelled:

Sunday 19 December – Festival of 9 Lessons and Carols
Tuesday 21 December – Concert by The Brightones
Friday 24 December – Family Crib Service
Other advertised services will go ahead as planned. Face masks are compulsory, gentle singing is advised and we may need to restrict numbers.
This has been a difficult decision to make but we are seeking to act responsibly at this time of uncertainty and increased risk of Covid infection. Thank you for your understanding. Fr Anthony

 ‘Shepherds Arise’

Nearly thirty enthusiastic local singers, musicians and mummers present a selection of beautiful old West Gallery carols from Sussex villages accompanied by flute, fiddle, bassoon, clarinet and concertinas. Between the carols are readings about Christmas in Sussex in the past, and the musicians play lively dance tunes from old Sussex manuscripts. As always, there will be some old favourites & some new additions. This is a lovely celebration of Christmas from earlier centuries, still full of the joy and delight it gave then.

Free entry. Retiring collection towards St Margaret’s Church.

Saturday 18th December at 1500

Massimo Redaelli (violin)

Violinist Massimo Redaelli will perform a solo programme including the first of Bach’s solo Violin Sonatas (BWV 1001) and the Second Partita (BWV 1004). Massimo performs on a violin by Thomas Urquhart, instrument maker to the English Court, from around 1680, in its original set-up. This violin is close in construction to contemporary northern European models and thus particularly suited to Bach. Tickets £7.50, raising funds for St Margaret’s Church.

Tuesday 21st December at 1930 (live and live-stream)

The Brightones

The acappella trio with local musicians Ellie Edmonds, Emma Stannard and Georgia Bishop will perform a selection of jazz standards, traditional folk songs and Christmas songs. The concert will also be available to live stream. Tickets £5.

Help required

To take pressure off the Churchwardens who do so much for us behind the scenes, we are looking for volunteers to organize and serve refreshments at the four concerts this month. Please do help if you can and let Dawn or Heather know your availability.

Christmas Flowers

Please consider making a donation to an arrangement of flowers for our Christmas services. We’ll keep it simple but beautiful!

Christmas Cards

We’re having church Christmas cards produced using images of the stained glass windows which depict the Annunciation and Nativity. They will be available for sale next week. Many thanks to Sarah Lawrence for designing them for us. Also, the PCC suggests that rather than sending cards to each other in church, there will be one large card for all to sign and members are encouraged to donate the money they would have otherwise spent to our Christmas charities.

Christmas Mission Giving

At its meeting on Thursday, the Parochial Church Council agreed that our Christmas collections would be divided equally between Off the Fence (restoring the lives and hopes of the homeless, women at risk and vulnerable school children in Brighton & Hove) and Voices in Exile (supporting refugees, asylum seekers and those with no recourse to public funds). Please give generously.

Visit to Brighton by John Bell

John Bell, founder of the Iona community, is coming to St Nicholas’ Church, Dyke Road, Brighton on Thursday 9th December at 1930.  Hosted by the Gender & Sexuality group, John will speak on ‘In solidarity with outsiders… how Christians deal with difference’. There will also be Iona inspired worship.  Admission free, all very welcome. Refreshments afterwards. John Bell (born 1949) is a Scottish hymn-writer and Church of Scotland minister. He is the founding member of the Iona Community, a broadcaster, and former student activist. He works throughout the world, lecturing in theological colleges in the UK, Canada and the United States, but is primarily concerned with the renewal of congregational worship at the grass roots level.

St Margaret’s CE Primary School: Foundation Governor Vacancies

We currently have vacancies for two Foundation Governors.

Foundation Governors are appointed by the Diocesan Board of Education, but it is usual practice for candidates to be nominated by the parish churches of St Margaret’s and St Wulfran’s.  Applications from individuals with experience in analytical thinking and understanding data would be particularly welcome, however, that isn’t compulsory.

What is essential, is to have an interest in education, be able to ask carefully considered questions and be willing to commit to attending governance meetings.  We typically meet as a Full Board 5 times per year, usually from 1630-1830 on Monday evenings.  Governors are also encouraged join one or more sub-committees, that meet between 3 and 6 times per year.  These meetings may take place during the school day.

Both the Local Authority and the Diocese offer a range of high-quality training to support Governors in their induction and beyond.

Further information on the role of a Foundation Governor is available in the Governor section of the school website.  The application form for Foundation Governors is available on the Diocesan website – Foundation Governor Nomination Form.  Paper copies of these documents are also available in both churches.

If you think this is something you might be interested in, then please contact either of the Co-Chairs for an informal discussion.

The Co-Chairs can be contacted as follows:

Living Faith Course
The Diocese of Chichester Diocese is running a course for lay people who are active in church life and who want to grow in discipleship. The course is designed to help people find and grow
in the ministry to which God is calling them which may be Reader ministry, Authorised Lay Ministry, or using other gifts as a volunteer in church. It is an exploratory course, so you’re not committing to anything! Information is available online by searching ‘Chichester Living Faith’. Highly recommended, especially as the church of the future will rely less on ordained ministry (i.e. the clergy) and more on lay minsters.

Quiz Night
The recent quiz night raised a very splendid £1010 for church funds. Congratulations and thank you to Elaine and Philip Eardley and all who helped make the evening such a success.

Thank you…

to everyone who organised and participated in last Sunday’s surprise celebration of my 50th birthday, and to those who made a special effort to be with us in church. I have been overwhelmed with cards, messages and gifts from members of the congregation and residents and traders in the village. I am also extremely grateful for the cheque for £1,300, some of which will be spent on getting my dear Godfather’s clock repaired – I remember it from my early childhood.

As I said at the time, you are a very lovely and loving congregation. Thank you so very much. Fr Anthony

There will be no Eucharist this coming Thursday at 1000 (although see above re Harry Denby). The services next Sunday and on Thursday 21st October will be taken by Fr Dominic Keech, Vicar

Mission Planning ‘Away Day’
Many thanks to members of the congregation and local residents who joined us yesterday. The plans for the developed church were projected onto a screen and talked through in detail and artist’s impressions of the proposed extension and the interior of the church were revealed (copies are on the wall in the porch). This was an open opportunity for people to ask questions, raise concerns or offer positive feedback. The rest of the day was spent exploring ways in which we might inhabit the newly created space, and it was good that many people contributed imaginative ideas and are willing to get involved. We will be looking for volunteers to help run events in the church and to maintain the churchyard. Thank you to Heather for facilitating and to Dawn for organizing the catering. A happy day!

Knit & Natter is resuming!
The group is reconvening on Wednesday 6th October at 1900 in church. New members always welcome. We knit and we natter. Just come along! Sue Leaney

Church Services – a change
Now that the majority of people who have returned to church are attending the 1000 Eucharist on Sundays, and given the very low attendance at the 1130 service last week as a result of that, today will see the last celebration of the Eucharist at 1130. From Sunday 3rd October there will be one service, the Parish Eucharist, at 1000. The Thursday morning service will continue. Although we will not be reintroducing the 0800 Holy Communion on Sundays, we will begin to experiment with the idea of the occasional Choral Evensong on Sundays, reintroduce the Healing Service, and explore other alternative non-Eucharistic services.

Confirmation Service at St Margaret’s
The Bishop of Lewes, The Right Reverend Will Hazlewood, will be with us at 1800 on Sunday 21st November this year for a service of Baptism and Confirmation. We have two (possibly three) candidates for this. If you – or anyone you know – might be interested in being prepared for Baptism and/or Confirmation please let me know. Fr Anthony

The Smugglers Play!

Rottingdean in Bloom Silver Award for the churchyard
Below are some comments from the judges’ report. Many thanks to our gardener, Paul Wright, for all his efforts. We’d like some volunteer help too!

‘This very extensive and historic churchyard is made up of a number of separate areas divided by old flint walls and is clearly an attractive haven for wildlife. A very large part of the churchyard has been largely left to nature. Paul the gardener has up to one day a week allocated to managing the site and with no volunteers, this is clearly insufficient to maintain this very large area of land to a reasonable level.

Paul is keen to encourage wild flowers by leaving large areas uncultivated. This is to be encouraged but rather than leaving entirely to nature, wild flower areas need to be managed. There are many volunteer groups in Rottingdean and it would be worthwhile tapping into them via Rottingdean in Bloom.

The churchyard would benefit from some interpretation boards indicating what is going on and explaining the extensive flora and fauna to be found. Bird and bat boxes would be a useful addition. Overall an area with much scope which is an obvious wildlife haven but would benefit from a management plan and some volunteer input.’

Mission Planning ‘Away Day’
We're holding an ‘away day’ (in church though!) on Saturday 25th  September from 1000-1500 to think about ways in which St Margaret's might better engage with the wider community and offer the resources and space we hope to develop to a broader constituency of users. Do come along and share positive thoughts and ideas. We hope to have artist’s impressions of the proposed development too. Get involved! We'll be recruiting volunteers too in the future to make the church building the community hub we’d like it to become. Lunch provided – please sign up on the sheet in the porch.

Confirmation Service at St Margaret’s
The Bishop of Lewes, The Right Reverend Will Hazlewood, will be with us at 1800 on Sunday 21st November this year for a service of Baptism and Confirmation. We have two definite candidates for this. Licensing Service
Mthr Lucy Sullivan is to be licensed as Priest-in-Charge of Aldwick and Pagham on Monday 6th September at 1930 at the church of St Thomas à Becket, Pagham. Anyone is welcome to attend: no notice is required. Please pray for Mthr Lucy as she continues her ministry in those parishes.

The late William Bailey RIP
We have received notice of an extremely generous legacy
of £169,106.89 from the late Bill Bailey. The money is restricted
to the repair of the church building and will cover much of the repair element of the Development Plan. Other funds will come from the sale of St Margaret’s Cottage which will be on the market very soon, another legacy of which we have been notified and a generous donation from two members of the congregation. We hope that others may wish to make some contribution, perhaps by purchasing a chair in memory of a loved one: more to come on that when we are more certain of details and timescales.

Ready to sing again…?
We will be reintroducing congregational hymn singing in church next Sunday, 5th September. You are strongly advised to wear your face mask, especially when singing, please. Several other churches are making this move on the same Sunday. Thank you for your continued patience as we continue to navigate through uncertain times.

All Change!
Heather and I recently attended the ‘Archdeacon’s Visitation’ at Alfriston where we were sworn in as Churchwardens for another year.

The Archdeacon, when he addressed the gathering, took as his theme ‘Change’. He spoke of the enormous upheaval we have experienced as a result of the pandemic, and its effect upon the Church. He emphasised that things will not be going back to the way they were and that we must prepare ourselves for more change.
The restrictions imposed by the pandemic have highlighted problems that were already present within the church and have brought forward the need to address them.

The Church of England is losing its congregations, priests are retiring and some priests are being asked to take early retirement as churches are closed. This has a large impact on finances. Those churches spared closure, for the moment, are being asked to substantially increase the amount they contribute to the diocese.
St Margaret’s is not immune from this and that is why the meeting on 25th September is so important as we seek to find ways to adapt to the changes coming. The meeting from 1000-1500 is open to all the congregation, so please come along and share your ideas so that our response to the diocese will be representative of all our views and not only those of the PCC. Dawn Davidson
Two funerals
The funeral of Valerie Webb will be held in church on Monday 23rd August at 1500. Mervyn Peatfield’s funeral will be held in church on Tuesday 24th August at 1500. May they both rest in peace and rise in glory.

Musical Theatre Project – the launch!
We’re looking forward to holding a music theatre day for local children on Saturday 21st August from 1000 with a performance and refreshments in St Margaret’s at 1800. All are welcome to attend the show! Jonathan Hodgson

Blister pack recycling scheme
The pharmacy in Woodingdean can no longer take blister packs for recycling. We’re looking for a volunteer (or a few on rotation) to take the packs we’ve collected to Superdrug on Western Road, Brighton. If you can help, please contact Fr Anthony who will put you in touch with Joanna Gurr who is organizing the scheme.
The Eucharist this Thursday will be celebrated by Fr Dominic Keech, Vicar of Brighton, St Nicholas of Myra.

COVID-19 test kits
On 12th August, Brighton & Hove City Council reported that ‘we had 1375 confirmed new COVID-19 cases in Brighton & Hove – higher than last week’s figure of 1135. This is up 21% on the previous week
equivalent to a weekly rate of 471 per 100,000 residents – up from 390.2 per 100,000 in the previous week; higher than the South East which was 253.3 per 100,000; higher than England, which was 296.6 per 100,000.’

Please continue to be cautious, even if you have been fully vaccinated, to keep yourself and those around you safer. A supply of test kits is now available in the church porch: please help yourself.
